Chameleon mood scarf

At a glance, technology and fashion might seem difficult concepts to unite. Yet if combined properly they can enrich each other wonderfully. The Chameleon Mood Scarf shows just how far textile and clothing can adapt to the user, making products more personal and meaningful. The pattern in the Chameleon Mood Scarf reacts to mood, light and temperature, and creates a permanent sense of comfort, warmth, peace and safety.

As the name implies, the inspiration behind the Chameleon Mood Scarf idea came from the chameleon. Contrary to what is widely believed, chameleons do not use their famous ability to change colour to blend in with their surroundings, but rather primarily for social communication and to regulate body temperature. Chameleons use colours to send each other signals, and their skin turns lighter or darker as the ambient temperature rises or falls.

The Chameleon Mood Scarf is made up of several layers.

In the same way that a chameleon’s skin contains different overlaid colours, this scarf also features separate layers, each with its own colour and pattern. These layers change in response to mood, light and temperature, causing the scarf to change its appearance at different moments.

Chameleon mood scarf - four emotions

The black pattern is printed in thermochromic ink, which responds to the wearer’s body temperature. The pattern disappears as it warms up; this gives the scarf a more muted appearance and renders the wearer less conspicuous, which is precisely what you want if it is fear or stress that has forced your body temperature up. The light green pattern is printed in photoluminescent ink, which reacts to light and glows greenish blue in the dark for added visibility. The white print uses photochromic ink. This print reacts to UV light and changes from white to orange when the wearer goes outdoors, reflecting how sunlight often improves people’s mood.

The feeling that a scarf gives its wearer depends not only on its appearance, but also and just as importantly on its material. The scarf is made from 100% silk chiffon. Silk is highly absorbent, making it pleasant to wear when the weather is hot or when the wearer engages in physical activity. Its low conductivity also allows it to retain warm air close to the wearer’s skin when the weather is cooler.

The Chameleon Mood Scarf is an accessory that alters itself to suit its wearer without any effort or even any conscious thought on the wearer’s part. It is illustrative of how ink sensors and textile can be integrated – and it shows how technology might play a role in changing the future of clothing.
